After defeats in Paris and Halle, and the departure of staff members, some believed he was on the brink. Then, in London (thanks in part to a bit of luck), he defeated Djokovic in three sets to reach his fourth consecutive Grand Slam final. Now, he's looking for revenge against Alcaraz.

In the frenzy that often surrounds interest in something recently discovered, some believed Jannik Sinner was in complete disarray after his early defeat in Halle and the sudden departure of two members of his staff. Add to this the price of his loss in the Roland Garros final to Carlos Alcaraz and the perennial controversy over not paying taxes in Italy (something Fabio Fognini, who retired this week and has been lauded in the press these days for this tax debate alone), and it seemed the world number one would be there for very little longer. Because, "he's back down to earth," and some defeats hurt more than others.

But Sinner, who some have even accused of not knowing how to have enough fun (he went to visit his parents in Sesto Pusteria for a few days while Alcaraz was having fun in Ibiza), has continued to train in the meantime, even taking advantage of a bit of luck in the round of 16 against a dominating Grigor Dimitrov. And now he's in the Wimbledon final for the first time, after defeating Novak Djokovic in three sets for the fifth consecutive time . He's someone who keeps playing tennis for the sole pleasure of racking up slam victories. As Emma Raducanu pointed out in London, in every tournament there are all the losers and only one winner. In the last 18 months, Sinner has lost nine times, five of them to Alcaraz. Sunday will be the second consecutive slam final against each other, and for Sinner the fourth in the streak from New York to London (with a three-month break in between). Not bad for someone “in confusion”.
